Dallas Parks and Recreation opened two new beginner segments along the White Rock Lake perimeter path on July 1, adding 1.8 miles of separated bike lanes marked for speeds under 10 miles per hour.
City data show adult cycling participation in Dallas rose 18 percent between 2023 and 2025, driven by families looking for outdoor activity that fits around school schedules and work commutes. The new lanes address complaints from parents about speeding road cyclists near the lake's popular fishing piers and playgrounds.
The White Rock Lake loop in East Dallas covers a 9.3-mile paved circuit that stays mostly flat and passes restrooms at the Winfrey Point boathouse and the Bath House Cultural Center. Families can park at the Mockingbird Point lot and ride clockwise to avoid the steeper hill near Garland Road. The Katy Trail in Uptown Dallas runs 3.5 miles from the American Airlines Center south to the Oak Lawn neighborhood, with water fountains every half mile and bike-rental kiosks operated by the city at the Hall Street entrance.
Both routes fall under the Dallas Parks and Recreation Department's 2026 Trail Safety Initiative, which installed additional lighting and posted speed-limit signs after a 2025 count recorded 620,000 annual visits to the two corridors combined.
Parents can rent helmets and child seats for $8 per day at the White Rock Lake boathouse concession stand, open daily until 6 p.m. The department recommends starting on weekday mornings before 9 a.m. to miss weekend crowds. Riders should check the Dallas 311 app for any temporary closures due to maintenance, which occurs on the second Tuesday of each month.
City staff will host a free family skills clinic at the Katy Trail's Knox Street entrance on July 18 from 8 to 10 a.m., covering basic signaling and how to yield at the three street crossings. Registration opens on the Parks website 48 hours in advance.
